Nyoman's Art Studio

When you walk around in Ubud you will see many galleries. The Ubud community is very artistic and Nyoman is no exception to that. Over the years he has created many paintings which have found their way around the world. One of the highlights of his painting career was an exhibition in Germany.

Since starting to paint, many years ago, his styles and subjects have changed. In the art studio you’ll find a refreshing variation of paintings. Nyoman doesn’t limit himself to a certain style or mass production of over used subjects as seen over the island. Sometimes the paintings are traditional and realistic, and at others a more abstract style appears. You will most definitely have the impression that you have not seen similar work before, and the thought of “wait a minute, I’ve seen this one before” will not enter your mind.

Mood and inspiration determine the painting. Sometimes Nyoman knows exactly how a mental picture can be transferred even before a single stroke of paint touches the canvas. On other occasions the painting will develop itself as Nyoman puts his all into the creative process. Because of this way of painting, straight from the heart, it is always a surprise to what you’ll find in the art studio. Returning visitors will be amazed at the variety and changes and changes in style compared to previous visits. However, there is one thing all his paintings have in common, they are all vessels of a great love of art, life and expression unique to Nyoman. Only repeated and close observations of the paintings will reveal all their details and secrets, and in some instances these take years to discover. Every viewing is revelation and a source of new wonder.

The paintings below are examples of work from the period 1992 to 1997. Starting with typical Balinese objects like the Barong and temple ceremonies, and up to the abstract, which holds the viewer enthralled for the quest of more hidden details and surprises.

These paintings are examples from Nyoman's work from autumn 2002 up to spring 2004. Themes which he has been working on earlier have been used again but not surprisingly you will be able to explore some totally new styles as well.  For Nyoman painting is a very spiritual experience. The whole process from inspiration until signing the painting is accompanied by traditional Balinese rituals in order to get the picture just the way Nyoman wants them to be. Timing is extremely important and therefore one can never say how long it is going to take before a painting is finished or how many of them will be made within a certain timeframe. As said before, Nyoman paints from the heart and does not believe in mass production. That's also the reason that he keeps certain paintings which are very special to him for his private collection and does not want to part with them.

Nyoman's paintings find an ever growing group of admirers. Most of them don't stay long in his gallery. Therefore it is impossible to give you an exact overview paintings available for sale at the moment on this website.  We'd like to give you an impression of his work but by the time you are reading this article things might have totally changed again. The only way to find out is to visit Nyoman's art studio.

Nyoman enjoys making smaller black and white or color drawings to keep the creative process going on. The drawings are sometimes trials for full size paintings. Even though the size of the drawings is small the amount of details is phenomenal. Here are two of them.

Please feel free to enjoy Nyoman’s work at your leisure. If you are interested in purchasing some of his work you will not find yourself being pushed into a sale. These works are an extension of Nyoman himself, and though a sale is possible, a chat and maybe a compliment are more important to Nyoman than a quick sale. It might be that there’s a painting you would really like to own yourself, in that case you will be surprised by the reasonable prices Nyoman charges. Whatever you want, the choice is yours, the joy shared.
